Russian Painters

Russia is rich in outstanding painters, who are famous all over the world. Their works are exhibited in the Tretyakov Art Gallery in Moscow, The State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and in other museums of our country.

Vasily Ivanovich Surikov is an outstanding Russian master.  He was born in 1848 in Krasnoyarsk. In 1870 the talented youth came to Petersburg and entered the Academy of Arts. He worked in the genre of historical painting. Surikov’s first large painting, the "Morning of the Streltsy Execution” (1881), was devoted to the time of Peter the Great. The picture "Menshikov in Beryozov” (1883) was devoted to Alexander Menshikov, the statesman at the time of Peter the Great.  During 1884-1912 Surikov painted "Boyarinya Morozova”, "Yermak conquering Siberia”, "Suvorov Crossing the Alps”, "Stepan Razin”. Master created many portraits, mostly the Siberian women, dressed in old Russian costumes. He also made several interesting self-portraits and many wonderful water-colours. Vasily Surikov died in 1916 in Moscow. 

Isaac  Ilych Levitan is a real poet of Russian countryside. He continued and developed the traditions of painters of the Russian realistic school – Savrasov, Polenov, Serov. He worked in the genre of landscapes. He likes  travelling over the Volga region  and portrayed it in his paintings. For his life and painting he chose Plyoss – a small beautiful town on the Volga. His paintings "Evening”, "Golden Plyoss”, "After Rain” reflect his love for nature. Many people admire his pictures "Deep Water”s, "Evening Bells”, "Springtime”, "The Last Snow”, and, of course, his famous "Golden Autumn”. All his paintings are very emotional, lyrical and realistic.  Levitan made several journeys to France, Italy and Germany where he painted a number of landscapes, but his best works were devoted to Russia. He was only 40 when he died in 1900. 


Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin was born in 1832 in the family of a merchant. He studied in Moscow School of Painting and then in the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. He is considered to be one of the most powerful landscape painters. The most famous of his works are: "Morning in a pine forest”, "Rye”, "Fog in a wood”, "Path in a forest”, "Wood distances” and others. His landscapes are full of beauty and harmony. Shishkin will remain in the history of Russian landscape painting as a wise, truthful interpreter  of nature. He died unexpectedly in 1898.
