Holidays in the UK

English year is rich in holidays. It starts in January with New Year’s Day. Young people like to go to restaurants or to dancing clubs. Only in Scotland people celebrate New Year’s Day as a family holiday.

On the 14th of February the English celebrate St.Valentine’s Day or as it is called "All lovers day”. People send Valentine’s cards to their lovers. 

In March there is unofficial holiday - Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent starts. Women organize Pancake Day races on that day.

In April they celebrate April Fool’s Day. People play jokes on each other and when they discover the joke they say "April Fool”.

In May and August there are two Bank Holidays when people with their families go to the nature and have picnics. In villages they celebrate May Day.

In September Harvest Festivals are held. This is a Christian holiday to thank God for a good harvest. People decorate churches with fruit and flowers.

The 31st of October is children’s most favourite holiday – Halloween. On this day children dressed in funny costumes visit their neighbours saying "Trick or treat!” and get sweets. 

In November they celebrate Guy Fawkes’ Night setting off fireworks.

The English celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December. They buy a lot of presents for their parents and friends. That is the most favourite holiday for everybody. On Christmas holidays people don’t go to work and children don’t go to school.
