English Painters

Thomas Gainsborough  is an outstanding English master.  He was born in 1727 in Sudbury. His father was a cloth merchant. In 1740 his father sent him to London to study art. Thomas Gainsborough  worked in the genre of portrait painting. In Britain he  was a fashionable artist. He painted ceremonial portraits. He tried to portray the inner world of his sitters. He invented a new genre of  painting: a mixture of a portrait and a landscape. His most famous works are: "Mrs. Sarah Siddons”, "The Blue Boy”, "The Morning Walk”, "Road through Wood”. Master created about 800 portraits and more than 200 landscapes.  He died in 1788.

William Turner was born in 1775 in a rich London  family. He studied in the Royal Academy of Art in London. He traveled a lot and worked in the genre of seascape painting. The most famous of his works are: "Rain, Steam and Speed”, "Fire at Sea”, "Snowstorm” and others. His seascapes are full of beauty and harmony. He died in 1851.

John Constable is a typical English landscape painter.  He was born in 1776. His father was a miller on the river Strop. And all his life John Constable portrayed his native countryside in his works. He studied in the Royal Academy of Art in London. His best paintings "Cornfield”and "Dedham Lock and Mill” reflect his love for nature. All his paintings are very emotional, lyrical and realistic.  He died in 1837.
